The Department of Biological Sciences consists of Biotechnology, Microbiology, Biochemistry and Zoology.
State of art infrastructure apart, a team of highly qualified and dedicated faculty makes the learning experience very rewarding. Facilities at the department include a well operational library with books, magazines and journals. The department is a member of the All India Biotech Association and a life member of Biotech Consortium India Ltd.
Microbiology courses have been offered form the year 1994 at the UG, PG and Research levels. The department has produced several rank holders and Gold Medalists since its inception.
The department of Biochemistry was established in 1998 and today has courses at the UG, PG and research level degrees. Many of the students have brought honor to the institution, including gold medals in the university examinations.
In the year 2010, an animal house and a green house were set up to give students learning in specialized areas.The institution has obtained ethical clearance from the Ministry of Environment and Forest, Govt. of India for the handling of animals. It is the first among institutions to obtain this feature in Periyar University, Salem.
